PILATES

What is Pilates?

  • Its Origins

Pilates appeared in 1920. It takes its name from its creator, Joseph Pilates, a German athlete who studied multiple disciplines and who developed this method while he was a prisoner of war. First designed for the physical rehabilitation of war veterans, he then emigrated to the United States where his method met with many followers.

  • Its Practice

Pilates is mainly performed lying down or sitting down, it is a series of exercises that have a moderate number of repetitions because the emphasis is more on the control and the quality and precision of the movement performed using the right muscles rather than on a large number of repetitions. The pace is moderate also for this same reason.

Pilates places great importance on breathing. It is a lateral thoracic breath to maintain abdominal engagement. Exhalation is often done during exertion to promote the engagement of the deep abdominal muscles (Transverse) and stabilize the lumbopelvic region.

It is possible to add small equipment to increase resistance (flexbands, fitness circle, stability ball,...). There are also other big equipment (Reformer, Cadillac, Chair ...) which offer a variety of exercises.

  • Its goals

Pilates, although it promotes greater concentration and body awareness, focuses on the body. It focuses on strengthening the transverse abdomen (the deepest layer of the abdominals that wrap horizontally around the torso), obliques, back muscles and pelvic floor during complex movements. And then add a work on the gluteal muscles, and the legs and arms. If you are looking to strengthen your muscles in awareness and depth and thus prevent injuries, rebalance muscle imbalances and improve your coordination and posture, Pilates will be the ideal method.
